SENECA 3, ST. LAWRENCE (K) 0
Most rookies entering post-secondary athletics are just hoping to make the team and maybe earn some playing time. Stephanie Harris failed to get the message. The first year student from Bradford scored the eventual game winner early in the first half giving her the team lead in goals. The goal helped result in another home victory for the Sting who are unbeaten at home since October 15, 2009 (8-0-3).
The home team game out strong in the first half, generating numerous scoring opportunities, but were unable to beat Vikings goalkeeper Jessica Dodge. That all changed in the seventh minute when Harris netted her fourth of the season.
Harris took a pass and drove a low hard kick from 22 yards out towards the Vikings' goalkeeper. The shot found its way past a diving Dodge into the bottom right corner of the net to give her team a 1-0 lead.
Second year Hilda Chmait added to the lead in the 33rd minute. Chmait took a pass from Cassandra Nicolodi and struck the ball with her left foot from 10-yards out. The ball sailed across the net just inside the far post to put the Sting up 2-0 heading into the half.
Seneca continued to generate scoring opportunities in the second half, only to see their shots miss the target or see Dodge come up with a great save.
Relentless pressure would pay off for the Sting as Crystal Camilleri closed out the scoring in the 68th minute for her second of the season. Seneca set up from a corner kick which almost went in directly. Camilleri met the corner kick in front of the Vikings' goal and softly directly the ball in for the 3-0 lead.
Liana Tome recorded her fourth shutout of the season and has allowed just four goals in six matches this season.
The Seneca Sting (5-1-0) will next host Loyalist (1-1-3) on October 3 while St. Lawrence (K) (2-4-1) will travel to Fleming in their final regular season match on October 4.
