DURHAM 3, SENECA 2
OSHAWA, Ont. – With a trip to the OCAA women's soccer quarterfinals on the line, Durham College came up with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the nationally ranked Seneca Sting.
Both teams entered their regular season finale with matching records. With the win, Durham improves to 7-1-0 and into first place in the OCAA east region. Algonquin (6-0-1) is two points behind Durham with one game remaining (Wednesday vs. La Cite) in their regular season.
In Tuesday night's match, Seneca got on the board at the 36 minute mark as Natalie Colangelo beat back-up goalkeeper Sarah Broderick off a rebound. Broderick replaced starting netminder Alicia Del Fuoco who was injured 17 minutes into the game.
Five minutes into the second half, Broderick made a highlight reel save to keep the Lords within one goal. After the save, the Lords streaked up the field and Leanne Fomenko managed to find the back of the net for her sixth goal of the season to tie the game up at 1-1.
Eight minutes after the Lords opening goal, Megan Arsenault scored her league leading eighth goal off her right foot to put the Lords up 2-1.
With 20 minutes left in the game, Victoria Curci of the Sting managed level the score as she scored off a free kick which found the top left corner.
With the Sting fans still celebrating the game tying goal, Brittany Sero of the Lords found the ball in the 18-yard box and was able to beat Seneca's Liana Tome to restore the Lords one goal lead.
Over the next 20 minutes, Durham managed to put an end to the scoring spree to walk away with the 3-2 win, which was their sixth straight conference victory.
The Lords will now host a quarterfinal match-up next week as a trip to the provincial championship will be on the line. Their opponent will be determined this weekend with the opening round of the OCAA playoffs taking place around the province.
