HUMBER 3, DURHAM 1
OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College women's soccer team were defeated in their OCAA quarterfinal match-up on Saturday as the two-time defending OCAA champion Humber Hawks earned a 3-1 victory over the Lords.
Things started out in a good way for Durham as Brittany Sero scored at the 37 minute mark to give the Lords a 1-0 lead. Sero was able to find the loose ball in front of the net and beat Humber goalkeeper Katerina Conde to open up scoring in the game.
Shortly after, it seemed as if Humber was playing with an extra player on the field as a number of calls went against the home team.
Durham was called for a questionable foul inside the box, giving 2011 CCAA All-Canadian Keyla Moreno a penalty kick. Moreno made not mistake beating Durham keeper Alicia Del Fuoco to level the score at ones.
Three minutes later off a corner kick, the ball seemed to have hit the post and go straight back to the Hawk player. The referee indicated that Del Fuoco had tipped the ball off the post and straight back, allowing Humber to kick it back into play. Alora Tia Macey Walcott was the recipient of the gift as she scored, giving Humber a 2-1 lead.
In the second half, Durham had plenty of attempts to get back in the game but they all fell short. Durham would beat Conde late in the game, but the lineman put up his flag and called the Lords offside.
Humber's Ashley Orsorio scored at the 63 minute mark to give the Hawks a two goal cushion and the win.
This is only the third time in 16 years that the Durham College women's soccer program has not qualified for the final four.
The Lords finish the year with only two losses as they went 11-2-0. Durham will look to rebound in the OCAA indoor soccer season in the new year.
