ST. CLAIR 4, CAMBRIAN 0
PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The St. Clair College women's soccer team came away for the OCAA championships with medals around their necks. It wasn't the medal they hoped for but it was still a great accomplishment for the program in a very competitive field.
The Saints defeated the Cambrian Golden Shield from Sudbury 4-0 on Saturday afternoon to win OCAA bronze. The championship was hosted in Peterborough, Ont., by Fleming College. The medal is the first in 16 years for the women's outdoor soccer program and comes on the heels of the Saints winning a women's indoor soccer championship last March.
There was no scoring in the first half but St. Clair dominated most of the play but could not put one past the Cambrian keeper. The Saints came out on fire in the second half though going up 1-0 in the 53rd minute on a goal by Sam Geier. Nina Civitarese put the Saints up 2-0 in the 68th minute. Melanie Daniel iced the game in the 71st minute to put St. Clair up 3-0. Carly Malenfant made it 4-0 in the 88th minute for the last goal of the match. Katrina Arnold had a solid game in goal making some key saves in the first half to earn the win and shutout. Civitarese was named the player of the game for the Saints as well as making the championship all-star team.
St. Clair had earlier beaten Fleming College 6-2 in the quarterfinal match and then lost a close game in the semifinal to the defending OCAA champion and CCAA bronze medal winning Seneca Sting by a score of 2-1. The Saints ended their regular season with a record of 9-1 and tied for first place in the OCAA West Division. St. Clair was 4-0 in exhibition play and 3-1 in playoff matches. The Saints were ranked as high as second in Ontario and seventh in Canada late in the season.
