PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The St. Clair College women's soccer team got off to a great start at the OCAA provincial championship on Thursday. The Saints defeated the host Fleming Knights by a score of 6-2 in their quarter final match on Thursday night. The championships are being hosted in Peterborough, Ont., by Fleming College.
St. Clair got off to a great start with Bella Riccardi scoring 30 seconds into the game. However, Fleming responded a minute later to tie the game up at 1-1. Riccardi scored her second goal of the game in the 20th minute. Riccardi put the Saints up 3-1 late in the first half on a penalty kick. Melanie Daniel put St. Clair up 4-1 in the 68th minute. Fleming made it interesting making it 4-2 five minute mark. However, that was as close as they would get as Daniel put two more in to make it a 6-2. Riccardi was named the player of the game for the Saints.
St. Clair will now face the Seneca Sting on Friday at 6 p.m. in the championship semi-final. The winner of this match will advance to the gold medal game on Saturday while the loser will play for bronze. Seneca are the defending OCAA gold medalists and CCAA bronze medalists. Seneca ended the regular season in third place with a record of 5-2-3 in the very tough Central Division but are one of the hottest teams in the province having gone undefeated in their last five matches. The Saints played the Sting in a pre-season tournament and won by a score of 1-0.
