SENECA'S ALFRED HEADLINES OCAA WOMEN’S SOCCER AWARDS

TORONTO - Shanice Alfred (Airdrie, Alta.) of Seneca College is the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Women's Soccer Player of the Year.

The fourth-year forward is the OCAA and East Division Scoring Champion for the East Division champion Sting, scoring 25 goals in nine regular season matches. Alfred had four multiple goal matches, including tying an OCAA single game record with nine against the Loyalist Lancers on Oct. 14. Alfred receives other honours as well, including Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Canadian and East Division League First-Team All-Star.

The East Division Player of the Year is Sage Thomas-Roberts (Toronto) of Durham College. The second-year striker was second in OCAA scoring with 22 goals in 10 matches, including five matches with three or more goals. Thomas-Roberts' season high was a six-goal effort against the Fleming Phoenix on Oct. 14. Thomas-Roberts receives other honours as well, including CCAA All-Canadian and East Division League First-Team All-Star.

The West Division Player of the Year for the second straight season is Kaitlynn Russell (Mississauga) of Humber College. The third-year forward is the West Division Scoring Champion with 13 goals in 10 matches for the Hawks as they won the West Division title. Russell also received CCAA All-Canadian and West Division League First-Team All-Star honours.

The OCAA Rookie of the Year is Victoria Walsh (Georgetown) of St. Clair College. The forward was second among West Division players in scoring with 11 goals in 10 matches. As well as being named West Division Rookie of the Year, Walsh is an West Division League First-Team All-Star.

The East Division Rookie of the Year is Kai Douglas (Scarborough) of Centennial College. The forward scored nine goals in nine matches for the Colts. Douglas is also an East Division League First-Team All-Star.

St. Clair's Steve Vagnini is the OCAA Coach of the Year and a nominee for CCAA Coach of the Year. The Saints finished in second place in the West Division with a record of 7-1-2, quite a turnaround from a 2-7-1 mark a season ago. The Saints scored a division-high 46 goals while allowing only six against. Vagnini is also the West Division Coach of the Year.

Centennial's Rich Hirst is the East Division Coach of the Year. The Colts had a six point improvement in the standings from last season with a record of 7-1-2, allowing just six goals against.

The East Division Defensive Player of the Year is Centennial's Taylor Powell (Whitby). The fourth-year defender/midfielder played in all 10 matches, six of which Colts opponents did not score. Powell is also an East Division League First-Team All-Star.

Adriana Kanisek (Mississauga) of Redeemer University is the West Division Defensive Player of the Year. The third-year defender played in all 10 matches as the Royals allowed just nine goals against all season. Kanisek is also a West Division League First-Team All-Star.

The Seneca Sting and Mohawk Mountaineers were named the Best Defensive Teams in their respective divisions, both allowing just five goals against.

Several OCAA League All-Stars were also recognized. In addition to Alfred, Thomas-Roberts, Douglas and Powell, East Division First-Team All-Stars include Jocelyne Way (Schomberg) of Cambrian College; Emily Cullen (Pickering), Vanessa Lima (Toronto) and Jaelyn Reymer (London) of Centennial; Jessica Ferreira (Ajax) of Durham; and Jordan Burke (Scarborough) and Rebekah Lee (Burlington) of Seneca.

In addition to Russell, Walsh and Kanisek, West Division First-Team All-Stars include Ella Chase (Waterloo) of Conestoga College; Catarina Medeiros (Brampton) and Vanessa Reda (Vaughan) of Humber; Cassandra Campanella (Hamilton), Mia Hadley (Milton), Jaiden Morgan (Burlington) and Emily Schwarz (Stoney Creek) of Mohawk College; and Alexa Mognon (LaSalle) of St. Clair.

East Division Second Team All-Stars include Makayla Pearl (Cambridge) of Algonquin College; Cassidy Burton (Sudbury) and Grace Cranston (Sudbury) of Cambrian; Elizabeth Maione (Vaughan) of Centennial; Erika Bjorgum (Kingman, Alta.) of Durham; Brianna Samuels-McLaughin (Scarborough) of George Brown College; and Christina Diaco (Vaughan), Emma Gattoni (Toronto), Yoana Peralta Fernandez (Toronto), Jessica Shears (Stouffville) and Kayla Uddenberg (Richmond Hill) of Seneca.

Hayley Lewis (Mississauga) and Micayla Santaguida (Vaughan) of Humber; Alyssa Glasbergen (Burlington), Lauren Snider (Brantford) and Isabelle Udovc (Grimsby) of Mohawk; Lily Ryder (St. Thomas) of Niagara College; Mia Palango (Hamilton) and Emily Walraven (Burlington) of Redeemer; and Scotlyn Fick (Belle River), Layla Hutson (Windsor) and Brianna Kinsley-Clough (Georgetown) of St. Clair make up the West Division Second Team All-Stars.
