Humber wins OCAA championship
Humber's women's volleyball, winners of the last three consecutive
OCAA championships, made it four in a row with a dominating 3-0 win
over arch rival Nipissing in the final of the 2011 Women's
Volleyball championship event.
The last six OCAA title games have featured Humber and Nipissing,
with Humber winning five times.
The scores truly indicated the play of the games as Humber
dominated each set, winning 25-11, 25-12 and 25-21. The final set
saw Humber once again run out to a big lead, but Nipissing replied
bringing the game close as both teams got near the 20 point mark.
The Hawks went on another run to close the match.
The game was expected to be much closer given that both teams
finished the season with identical 21-1 records. In fact, Nipissing
swept Humber 2 weeks ago to grab the West Division crown.
The Hawks grabbed a number of tournament awards, led by Player of
the Year Landis Doyle being named the tournament MVP. Laura Bye,
Nina Carino and May Strutt were honoured as tournament All
Stars.
Humber will now advance to the CCAA National Championships, which
are being held in New Brunswick in two weeks time.

Fanshawe Falcons defeat Mohawk Mountaineers 3-2 (16-25,
15-25, 29-27, 25-22, 15-11)
Fanshawe wins OCAA Bronze Medal
The Fanshawe Falcons captured a well-deserved Bronze Medal at the
OCAA Women’s Volleyball Championships Saturday afternoon.
After falling behind to the Mohawk Mountaineers by two sets, it
seemed unlikely Fanshawe would come back. But after dropping the
first two by scores of 25-16 and 25-15, Fanshawe woke up taking the
tight third set, 29-27. After taking the fourth set 25-22, the
Falcons capped off their comeback with a 15-11 fifth-set win. It
was a fitting end to the tournament for Fanshawe, who came back
from down two sets earlier in the day in the Bronze Medal
semi-finals against Sheridan.
Mohawk Mountaineers defeat Loyalist Lancers 3-0 (25-17,
26-24, 25-20)
Mohawk advances to OCAA Bronze Medal Game
It wasn’t meant to be for the hometown Loyalist Lancers
Saturday morning in the OCAA Women’s Volleyball
Championships. After beating Cambrian, the#1 seed in the East
division, on Friday, the Lancers dropped their Bronze Medal
semi-final match against the Mohawk Mountaineers in three-straight
sets by scores of 25-17, 26-24 and 25-20. Despite the loss, it was
a gutsy effort for Loyalist, who saw their partisan crowd give them
a standing ovation as they shook hands with their opponents before
walking off the court for the last time this season. For graduating
student-athletes Joanne Laton, Lindsey Sinclar, Delia Leblanc,
Tiana Gauthier and Brittany Gray, it marked an end to their career
as Lancers. Surely, they will always take with them the fact they
were part of one of the most illustrious teams in recent Loyalist
College history.
For Mohawk, the tournament continues, as they secured a spot in
Saturday’s 2:00 PM Bronze Medal match. Their opponents will
be either the Sheridan Bruins or the Fanshawe Falcons, who play at
11:00 AM in the second Bronze Medal semi-final.
Fanshawe Falcons defeat Sheridan Bruins 3-2 (20-25, 12-25,
25-15, 25-10, 17-15)
Fanshawe advances to OCAA Bronze Medal Game
It was a proverbial barn-burner at Loyalist College Saturday
morning, as the Fanshawe Falcons reached the Bronze Medal game at
the OCAA Women’s Volleyball Championships with a thrilling
five-set win over the Sheridan Bruins. Sheridan looked poised to
move on with a 25-20 opening set win. They won the second set even
more emphatically 25-12. But Fanshawe rallied nicely, and after
putting libero Justine del Mundo (#1) into the game, the Falcons
took the third set 25-15. The fourth set was a decisive 25-10 win
for Fanshawe, forcing a fifth and final set.
The fifth set was as exciting as they come, with teams trading
points back and forth, but Fanshawe pulled off the comeback victory
winning the set 17-15 and taking the match with it. The Falcons
will join the Mohawk Mountaineers in Saturday afternoon’s
Bronze Medal game. That game goes at 2:00 PM at the Loyalist
College gym.
