NAINAIMO, B.C. - The Humber Hawks women's volleyball team scripted a great comeback in the third set to take down Fraser Valley 3-0 in the quarter-finals at the 2012 CCAA Women's Volleyball National Championships.
With the win the Hawks have now advanced to the national
semi-finals on Friday night. Their opponent will be either the host
VIU squad or the Atlantic champion Mount Saint Vincent Univesity.
Game time is 11 p.m. ET.
The Hawks played extremely well in the first two sets and were
rewarded with 25-18 and 25-16 wins.
In the first set Humber took control as the game passed the
15-point mark, and were never in danger of dropping the set.
The second set saw the Cascades only get as close as 20-15, before
Humber scored five of the next six points for the win.
The third set was one for the ages. The fifth seeded UFV team
seemed to be rolling on to a victory, never trailing as they hit
the 24-point mark. The announcers called the Hawks dead with them
behind 24-20, but it was not to be.
Humber ran off four straight points to tie the set. It looked like
the Cascades were in a position to win, leading 25-24, with serve.
A serve into the net tied the game. Freshman Deborah
Mitchell went back and served up two points for the set
and match win.
Rightfully so, the team celebrated on court as the game ended. This
was their first opening game win since the Hawks hosted the
Nationals in 2004.
Veteran middle Michele Ovezet was selected as the
Humber Player of the Game.
