DURHAM 3, SENECA 0
NORTH YORK, Ont. - Looking to regain some momentum heading into the holiday season after being swept in their previous two matches, the Seneca Sting came up on the wrong end of another sweep against the now 8-1 Durham Lords.
One of the bright spots for the Sting was fourth-year libero Claire Weisser. Time after time, Weisser was in the right position to keep a rally alive for her teammates, only to see the Lords get a block or force an attack error. For the match, the Queensville, Ont. native had 17 digs. Weisser now has 155 digs on the season with the next closest having just 94.
The first set looked promising for the underdog Sting, who battled point-for-point with the Lords. Their efforts were not rewarded though as the veteran Durham team went on a 10-0 run just past the midway point of the set. Despite a short run by Seneca, the Lords easily took the first set 25-14.
The second set saw Durham jump out to an early lead and maintain that lead throughout. A balanced offence aided the Lords in their 25-19 second set win to take a stranglehold on the match.
The final set of the match saw the Sting take an early lead thanks to a pair of kills by Febbie Valenzuela. Seneca would maintain that lead and hold a 13-12 advantage before giving up three consecutive points. Durham would close out the match with a 25-20 set victory.
Valenzuela was the team leader offensively for Seneca with five kills, an ace and one block. Bianca Newman and Allana Ferguson each added three kills. Danielle Simpson recorded 12 digs to go along with Weisser's previously mentioned 17.
Leah Saar and Rayan Bourne were the kill leaders for Durham with seven and six respectively. Saar and two-sport student-athlete Melissa Semeniuk each added two aces. Colleen McRobert had 12 digs for the Lords while teammate Meghan Renwick had 10.
The Seneca Sting (5-5) will host the Loyalist Lancers (5-3) on Wednesday, January 9 at 6 p.m. while the Durham Lords (8-1) will host Loyalist (5-3) next Wednesday at 6 p.m.
