OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham College women's volleyball team improved to 13-1 in OCAA conference play with a 3-1 victory over the Seneca Sting at the CRWC on Thursday night.
The Lords have won 12 straight matches and are in first place in the OCAA east region, four points ahead of a trio of teams.
Despite being down early in the first set by the score of 6-1, the Lords were able to claw back into the set eventually tying the game at 11 points. The Lords were able to build a lead and went on to win the opening set by the score of 25-22.
In the second set, the Sting could not match Durham's net presence as the Lords were able to block a handful of attempts by the Seneca players led by middles Melissa Semeniuk (Ajax, Ont.) and Natasha Jakovljevic (Oshawa, Ont.). Evidently, the Lords took the second set easily by a score of 25-12.
Seneca battled back in the third set in effort to keep the match close, as they were able to capitalize on some misplays by the Lords which resulted in some timely scoring. Although Durham was able to keep the Sting from running away with the set, the early mistakes proved to be costly as Seneca won by a score of 25-18.
In the fourth and final set, the Lords gained by their sharpness as earlier displayed which enabled them to win the by the score of 25-18.
Top scorers for Durham included Leah Saar (Pickering, Ont.) who had eight kills, three aces and six digs while Semeniuk had six kills to go along with four blocks. Saar has reached double digits in scoring in 10 of 14 matches this season.
Lords setter Meghan Renwick had an outstanding match distributing the ball throughout the line-up and confusing the Sting defenders from the service line.
For Seneca, Charito Humphreys (Sarnia, Ont.) had eight offensive points and six digs.
The Lords next match is against Georgian College (11-3) on Saturday January 26 in Barrie. Durham is back at home against the Algonquin Thunder on Friday February 1 at 6 p.m.
