SENECA 3, GEORGE BROWN 1
With an opportunity to climb over the .500 mark on the season, the Seneca Sting took full advantage with a four-set victory over the George Brown Huskies.
Seneca, playing in front of a larger-than-normal crowd, dropped the first set before rebounding with three straight set victories, all in convincing fashion.
The teams battled back and forth for the entire first set with neither team gaining much of an advantage. Seneca held a 20-19 lead late in the set before a Huskies rally stole the set away. Seneca struggled with errors all night, hitting a number of kill attempts long.
Seneca head coach Shane Timms must have said something to the Sting because they came out ready to play in the second set. Seneca jumped all over the Huskies early, jumping out to an 8-2 lead thanks to a number of big kills from Charito Humphreys. Febbie Valenzuela and Clare Weisser were instrumental all night in the backcourt, keeping rallies alive and giving Seneca a chance to win rallies they should have lost. Seneca rolled to a 25-15 set victory to even the match.
The Sting took command of the match in the third set with a 25-21 set victory. The set highlight was an extended rally which lasted for well over a minute with Seneca leading 8-6. Seneca won the rally and used that momentum to put some distance between themselves and their counterpart.
The fourth set saw Seneca lead from the beginning as they continued to wear down the Huskies. Size and athleticism were two things the Sting took advantage of all night as Seneca finished with twice as many kills as a team than George Brown (40-20).
Humphreys led the Sting with 14 kills, two aces and two blocks. Valenzuela had seven kills and five aces to go along with her 14 digs. Bianca Newman also added seven kills while Clare Weisser was once again the team leader with 20 digs.
George Brown's balanced offence saw Michelle Lo and Averil Luck lead the team with five kills apiece while Vanetta Martens added four kills. Luck also had four blocks. Iris Su Wong led the Huskies with 14 digs while Lo and Shanisha Purrier each compiled eight digs.
The Seneca Sting (9-8) will travel to play Algonquin (9-6) on Friday, February 8 at 8 p.m. while the George Brown Huskies (2-15) will play at Georgian (12-4) on Friday at 8 p.m.
