GEORGIAN 3, DURHAM 0
PETERBOROUGH, Ont. – The Georgian Grizzlies dominated the first game of Day 2 at the OCAA Women's Volleyball Championship at Trent University, defeating the East Division champion Durham Lords in three straight sets.
Georgian came out strong in the first set and set the pace on the way to a 25-10. The Grizzlies continued with their strong offence as they took the second set 25-17. The strong offence from Georgian ended up being too much for Durham as they continued to dominate, taking the third set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
The first set began with the Georgian Grizzlies coming out swinging as they pushed to an early 9-3 lead. The Grizzlies continued with solid defence and offence as they increased their lead with an eight-point run coming out of a Durham time out. Durham started to rally back late in the first set but the Grizzlies attack did not let up as they grabbed the first set 25-10. Leading the attack in the first set for Georgian was Natalie Buck (Keswick, Ont.) with four kills.
The Georgian Grizzlies used the momentum they gained in the first set and jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the second set. Durham tried to slow the Grizzlies attack with some solid defence but could not stop Georgian from pulling away again as the gap widened to 18-8 late in the second set. Durham attempted to close the gap in the final points of the set but it was not enough as Georgian took the set 25-17 and a commanding 2-0 match lead.
The third set began the same as the first two with Georgian jumped out to a quick lead. Durham pushed back after a slow start and narrowed the gap to 16-9 around the midpoint of the set. The Lords continued their effort to chip away at the Grizzlies as they got the score within two points late in the set. The late push by the Lords was not enough in the end as Buck ended the set with a powerful service ace as the Grizzlies went on to win 25-20.
The Player of the Game for Georgian College was Hannah Campbell (Midland, Ont.) with four kills, one service ace, and three blocks while Rayan Bourne (Whitby, Ont.) took Player of the Game honours for Durham with seven kills and one block.
Next match-up for Georgian will be Saturday at 11 a.m. against the losing team of the Humber Hawks versus Fanshawe Falcons game scheduled for Friday evening. The Durham Lords had a good showing this weekend but are now eliminated from tournament.
