HUMBER 3, FANSHAWE 0
LONDON, Ont. - In their first regular season game of the year, the Fanshawe women's volleyball team fell to the Humber Hawks in straight sets (25-19, 25-17, 25-20). Last season, Fanshawe finished third in the OCAA West Division with a record of 15-3, while Humber went undefeated (18-0) and were crowned 2012-13 OCAA provincial champions.
Fanshawe trailed early in the first set but went on a run and battled back to take a 10-9 lead. After a couple big blocks by Humber's Kelly Nyhof, the momentum shifted and Humber took control, winning the set 25-19. Nyhof finished the set with seven points.
In the second set, with the game tied, Humber scored five straight and took at 12-7 lead. After a Fanshawe timeout, the Falcons again battled back, and closed the gap to two until the Hawks pulled away and won the second set 25-17.
Humber took an early lead in the third set, but the Falcons slowly chipped away, and took their first lead of the set, 19-18. The Hawks finished the match on a 6-1 run and took the third set 25-20.
Humber's Nyhof led the Hawks with 16 points (12 kills, two blocks, two aces). Fanshawe's Stephanie Bignell, Shelby Charleton and Kaitlyn Kelly finished the match with six points each.
The Falcons next match takes place on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. on the road versus the Conestoga Condors (0-1). Last season, Fanshawe won both meetings against the Condors.
