FANSHAWE 3, CAMBRIAN 0
LONDON, Ont. - In their third match of the season, the Fanshawe women's volleyball team (2-1) defeated the Cambrian Golden Shield (1-2) in straight sets (25-20, 25-22, 25-15). With the win, Fanshawe moves into a four-way tie for second in the OCAA West Division.
Fanshawe fell behind early in the first set in large part to Cambrian's Sara Charlton, who finished the set with six points. After being down 17-11, Fanshawe's Shelby Charleton went on a five-point serving run, to bring the ladies within one. The Falcons kept the pressure on and came back to win the set 25-20.
Once again, Cambrian took an early lead in the second set and was up 10-3 before a big stuff block by Fanshawe's Stephanie Bignell seemed to change the momentum. Bignell is currently fourth all-time in blocks in OCAA history. Fanshawe went on a 10-3 run of their own and tied the game at 13. The teams traded points back and forth but Fanshawe scored the final two points of the set and won 25-22.
Fanshawe's Kaitlyn Kelly took over in the third set with a number of huge kills down the line. The Falcons cruised to the 25-15 win and won the match in three straight sets.
Kelly finished the match with a game-high 20 points (17 kills, two aces, one block). Cambrian's Charlton had 11 for the Golden Shield (five kills, four aces, three blocks).
The Falcons next match takes place on Sunday, November 10 at 1pm versus the Boréal Vipères (0-3). The Vipères joined the OCAA West Division this year, making this the first ever league meeting between these two teams.
