DURHAM 3, FLEMING 0
OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham College women's volleyball team swept
Fleming 3-0 at the CRWC Thursday night to earn their third
consecutive win. Set scores were 25-8, 25-12, 25-6.
The Lords appeared to be too much for the Knights from the opening
set as they mounted several long services and won all areas of the
match. The Lords were overpowering collecting 30 assists, 10
service aces and 24 kills compared with Fleming's three assists,
one service ace and three kills.
Durham jumped out to a quick 12-4 lead in the first set thanks to
excellent net play from Jessica Broad (Courtice,
Ont.) and Madison Rae-White (Cobourg, Ont.). The
two combined for 28 total attacks in the three set match with Broad
converting over half of her attacks for points.
The second set saw the Lords momentum continue as Broad collected
two early service aces to help the Lords jump out to a 13-7 lead.
Setter Joelle Parnham (Orillia, Ont.) was
exceptional in setting up her teammates as seven different Lords
collected at least one kill throughout the three set match. Parnham
finished the match with 25 assists along with one service ace and
one kill.
The final set again saw the Lords dominate the service game as
Natalie Manicotto (Winnipeg) began the set with
back-to-back aces. Fleming looked to regroup by taking a timeout
down 7-1 but Madison Pilon (Rondeau, Ont.)
extended the Lords lead serving seven consecutive points to pull
away in the final set and see the Lords collect their third
consecutive victory.
The Lords will next welcome Seneca to the CRWC on Thursday, Nov.
21 as they look to extend their current streak. The Sting are 3-1
to start the season.
Despite the tough loss, the game was a homecoming for Fleming head
coach Carol Hart who was a member of the 1985-86
Durham College women's volleyball team which was the first Lords
team to win a national medal. She will be recognized alongside her
teammates on Nov. 23 as her bronze medal winning team will be
inducted into the Durham College Sports Hall of Fame.
