TRENT 3, GEORGIAN 0
OSHAWA, Ont. – The Trent University women's volleyball team swept Georgian College in the OCAA bronze medal semi-final Saturday morning to earn a shot at winning their first OCAA women's volleyball medal.
Trent will now face Redeemer in the bronze medal game with first serve set for 4 p.m. which will be followed by the gold medal match between six-time defending OCAA champions Humber and Fanshawe at 6 p.m. Redeemer is in the same position as Trent having never reached the podium in the history of their program.
From the first serve, Trent displayed versatility in their attack that became too much for the Grizzlies to handle. OCAA all-star Erin Clancy (Woodbridge, Ont.) registered 27 assists taking advantage of the plethora of offensive options including game MVP Sarah MacLaren (Renfrew, Ont.) who earned her final kill on match point. Fellow OCAA all-star Rebecca Van Staalduinen (Peterborough, Ont.) led the team in kills earning 13 along with eight digs and four service aces while OCAA East region rookie of the year Jamie Fryer (Pickering, Ont.) collected nine kills and eight digs showcasing the variety of options that won the Excalibur the match.
Georgian's run at the OCAA championship now comes to an end, however, solace can be taken in the fact that they showcased a strong performance throughout the tournament. Several players received recognition for their outstanding play including game MVP Hannah Campbell (Midland, Ont.) who was a presence in the middle in their final game. Campbell finished in a tie with fellow standout Erin McClean (Barrie, Ont.) earning six kills in the semi-final matchup.
Durham College is proud to host the OCAA Women's Volleyball Championship (Feb. 20-22) and the OCAA Volleyball/Basketball All-Star Games (Mar. 22) at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.
