REDEEMER 3, SENECA 0
OSHAWA, Ont. - The Redeemer University women's volleyball team defeated Seneca College in straight sets Saturday morning to earn a spot in the OCAA championship bronze medal game. Set scores were 25-14, 25-20 and 25-13.
The Royals emotion and excitement were on display in this semi-final matchup from the very first serve as they battled to move one step closer to capturing their first OCAA medal in women's volleyball. Offensively, Redeemer was led by setter Kimberly Stewart (Hope, B.C.) who had an array of options throughout the three sets as nearly every hitter for the Royals appeared to be playing at the top of their game. Stewart finished the straight sets victory with 30 assists and five digs. Game MVP Charlene De Vries (London, Ont.), Yakira Smeltzer (Estevan, Sask.), Jocelyn Klompmaker (Beamsville, Ont.) and Curtiss Straatsma (Brampton, Ont.) all made huge impacts in the victory combining for 30 of Redeemer's 34 total kills.
Seneca's run at the OCAA championship now comes to an end but they will next host the CCAA national championship which they will receive an automatic entrance into as host allowing them the chance to earn a national medal. In the semi-final affair, the Sting were led by veteran middle and game MVP Maxine Law-Tan (Burlington, Ont.) who collected four kills, five digs and one service ace while OCAA second team all-star Lindsay Ballance (Napanee, Ont.) again registered a team high in kills with nine.
The bronze medal game will take place Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. and will feature the Royals against the winner of the second bronze medal semi-final between Georgian College and Trent University which will take place Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
