LONDON, Ont. - On Tuesday night, the Fanshawe Falcons (13-1) extended their Fanshawe College record winning streak to 13 games after defeating the Conestoga Condors (8-4) in three straight sets (25-9, 27-25, 29-27). The Falcons are in second place in the OCAA West Division.
With the score 4-4 in the first set, Fanshawe's Kaitlyn Kelly served up three straight aces forcing the Condors into an early timeout. Behind the serves of Kelly and Shelby Charlton, the Falcons put up an impressive 15-1 run and took a commanding lead in the set. Fanshawe went on to win the first by a final score of 25-9, including nine points from Kelly.
The second set was much closer with neither team leading by more than four. After being down by three, 18-15, the Condors came back with four straight and took the one-point lead. Fanshawe's Kelly had a big kill down the line and Fanshawe looked to be in control up 24-20. Conestoga came all the way back behind the serve of Stephanie Hoey and took a 25-24 lead until the Falcons scored three straight to win the set 27-25.
Conestoga came out as the aggressor in the third set and were up 8-5 before the Falcons scored three straight to tie the game. Fanshawe had its first lead of the set at 12-11 on an ace by Brie Bencich. The Falcons were up by as many as three but a 6-0 run but the Condors gave them a 21-18 lead. Fanshawe wouldn't give up and once again the game was tied at 24. After the teams went back and forth to 27-27, Fanshawe scored two straight and won the match 3-0.
Fanshawe heads on the road on Thursday, Jan. 30 to take on the CCAA No. 3-ranked Humber Hawks (14-0). The game takes place at 6 p.m. Humber is the only undefeated team in the OCAA and the only team to beat the Falcons this year in OCAA league play. Fanshawe and Humber are the only two nationally ranked teams from Ontario.
