CENTENNIAL 77, ST. LAWRENCE (K) 69
KINGSTON, Ont. - Needing a win to play an OCAA crossover qualifier game at home, the Vikings couldn't fully rebound from a tough opening quarter against Centennial College, falling 77-69. SLC is relying on their 10-game winning streak on getting to the post-season, having gone 0-3 since the streak was snapped.
"There was a lack of urgency from our team today," said SLC head coach Barry Smith. "We had a chance to host a crossover game with a win, but we came out flat and couldn't make plays when it mattered."
Both teams were forced to an extended stoppage after one of the referees twisted their ankle, causing a five-minute delay. Once the game resumed, Centennial came out firing and quickly built a strong lead, capturing important momentum on the road.
With the Vikings going cold with their shooting, things were not looking very optimistic. The Vikings, however, started to take advantage of loose three-point coverage and starting making shots, hitting four consecutive three-pointers in the second quarter to come within four points of tying the game.
St. Lawrence settled down to start the second half, forcing tough Centennial to take contested shots. With Donald Gibson coming alive at both ends of the court, the Vikings started to build some momentum that eventually led to them taking a brief lead for the first time in the game.
The Colts, however, tightened up defensively and started to capitalize on the cold SLC shooting in the fourth quarter, and stole a 77-69 win.
Andrew Dawkins finished with a team high 21 points.
The Vikings will now finish fifth overall in the OCAA East Division and will be travelling to Ancaster, Ont., to face the Redeemer University College Royals, who finished fourth in the OCAA West.
