Fanshawe Curling
The Fanshawe Falcons earned double gold at the 2012 Canadian
Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Curling Invitational
Championship. Both titles came down to extra ends, as Chris
Jay and his men's rink edged Red Deer 5-4, while
Chantal Lalonde and her women's rink defeated
Grande Prairie 6-4. Fanshawe last won a national curling title in
1988. This marked the first time the CCAA held a curling
championship since 1990.
Humber Indoor Soccer
The Humber Hawks repeated as men's and women's indoor soccer
champions, completing an OCAA soccer sweep for the second straight
season. Both teams had similar paths to gold, each going 2-0-1 in
the round robin. In the semi-finals, the men used extra time to
defeat Sheridan 2-1, while the women needed penalty kicks to upend
Durham 2-1. Both teams met Seneca in the finals, with the men and
women winning 3-0 and 4-0, respectively.

Mohawk Men's Basketball
The Mohawk Mountaineers won their first-ever Canadian Collegiate
Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Basketball National Championship
at Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro, N.S. Andrew
Cicuttini (Dundas, Ont.) was named tournament MVP, while
Manny Campbell (Burlington, Ont.) and
Taylor Dowhaniuk (Dundas, Ont.) earned tournament
first-team and second-team all-star honours, respectively. The
Mountaineers are the first OCAA team to win a men's basketball
national championship since 2001.
Algonquin Women's Basketball
The Algonquin Thunder finished in a tie for fifth place at the
CCAA Women's Basketball National Championship at Lethbridge College
in Alberta. The Thunder defeated UNBC 74-62 in the quarter-finals,
but dropped their bid to play for the national title losing 70-62
to Dawson in the semis, ending Algonquin's 19-game win streak.
Algonquin's season concluded with a 63-57 loss to St. Thomas in the
bronze semi-final. Abeer Farhat (Ottawa) was named
a tournament second-team all-star.

Humber Men's Volleyball
The Humber Hawks did something no other OCAA team has accomplished
in 28 seasons. Humber won its first-ever Canadian Collegiate
Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Volleyball National Championship
at Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford, B.C. CCAA and OCAA men's
volleyball player of the year Terrel Bramwell
(Mississauga, Ont.) was named tournament MVP, while Andre
Brown (Mississauga, Ont.) and Aleks
Inveiss (Toronto) were both named tournament first-team
all-stars.
Humber Women's Volleyball
Humber completed its best campaign in six years, finishing in
fourth place at the CCAA Women's Volleyball National Championship
at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, B.C. Humber fell just
short of its first-ever CCAA medal, losing the bronze medal match
3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 19-25, 25-18) to the UFV Cascades, a team the
Hawks defeated in the quarter-finals. Michelle
Overzet (Brampton, Ont.) and Nina Carino
(Scarborough, Ont.) were named tournament first- and second-team
all-stars, respectively.

Mohawk Men's Basketball
The Mohawk Mountaineers did something that has not been done since
Pierre Elliott Trudeau was Prime Minister. Mohawk won its first
OCAA men's basketball championship since 1972, defeating three-time
defending champion Humber 86-83 in the tournament finale. Mohawk's
all-Canadian guard Aminu Bello (Hamilton, Ont.)
was named player of the game, scoring 33 points. Mohawk goes on to
represent the OCAA at nationals, taking place in Truro, N.S. from
March 15-17.
Algonquin Women's Basketball
The Algonquin Thunder did something that they did only last year,
repeating as OCAA women's basketball champions. It wasn't easy,
however, as Algonquin needed double overtime to defeat divisional
rival Seneca 62-57 in the tournament finale. With their three wins
at the tournament, the Thunder extended their OCAA win streak to 18
games. Both Algonquin and Seneca both go on to represent OCAA at
nationals, taking place in Lethbridge, Alta. from March 15-17.

Humber Men's Volleyball
The Humber Hawks won a third consecutive OCAA men's volleyball
championship, sweeping host Nipissing 3-0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-22) in
the tournament finale. After defeating last year's silver medalist
Redeemer 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-23) in the quarter-finals, the Hawks
came back from two sets down to defeat eventual bronze medalist
Mohawk 3-2 (22-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-6) in the semi-finals.
Humber fourth-year setter Derek Quinn
(Mississauga, Ont.) was named tournament most valuable player.
Humber Women's Volleyball
The Humber Hawks won a fifth consecutive OCAA women's volleyball
championship, sweeping Cambrian 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-16) in the
tournament finale. Humber lost just one set at the tournament,
defeating Trent in the quarter-finals 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-16)
before winning 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-17, 25-21) over Nipissing in
the OCAA semi-finals. Humber's 21 wins without a loss marks the
first perfect OCAA women's volleyball season since 2008-09, when
the Hawks went 23-0.

Humber Badminton
The Humber Hawks won their third straight OCAA badminton title at
Redeemer on Saturday. All of Humber's competitors earned medals,
including OCAA men's singles champion Simon Yip,
women's singles champion Tracy Wong, and women's
doubles champions Alyssa Woon and Renee
Yip. Earning OCAA bronze medals were Leroy
Stanisclaus in men's singles, Dustin
Mitchell and Johnny Truong in men's
doubles, as well as Hadrian Liu and Suzy
Yan in mixed doubles.
Sault Curling
The Sault Cougars had home rink advantage at the OCAA Curling
Championships, which they used to their advantage. After a 5-3
record in the round robin, the Sault men's team avenged a pair of
earlier defeats to Fleming-Peterborough and undefeated Fanshawe to
win its first OCAA men's curling title since 1992. The women's team
defeated Mohawk in a tiebreaker just to advance to the medal round,
then knocked off a pair of undefeated teams in Seneca and Humber to
win its first OCAA women's crown since 1973.
Seneca Curling
The Seneca Sting defended its OCAA mixed curling title. After a
4-1 record in the round robin, Seneca defeated St. Clair 8-3 in the
semi-final. The Sting then avenged their only loss at the
tournament, defeating Fanshawe 9-2 in the OCAA final on the
strength of five points in the third end. Seneca second
Scott Sawarzky and third Madisson
Lank were named first team all-stars, while lead
Tameka Vaters and skip Matt Lowe
earned second team recognition.

Algonquin Men's Basketball
The Algonquin Thunder have done twice what no other team has been
able to do during the 2011-12 regular season. Algonquin defeated
Centennial (16-2) for the second time this season, a 77-69 decision
at home on Feb. 10. Algonquin then avenged an earlier overtime loss
to Fleming-Peterborough, winning 60-51 at home on Feb. 11. With a
15-3 record, the Thunder have already secured their spot at next
month's OCAA championship tournament, hosted by Algonquin.
Fanshawe Women's Volleyball
The Fanshawe Falcons have won six straight matches, including a
significant 3-1 (25-21, 25-21, 9-25, 25-20) win over Nipissing on
Feb. 11. With the victory, the Falcons moved ahead of Nipissing
into second place in the OCAA West region standings. With a 3-0
(25-23, 25-15, 25-23) win over Canadore on Feb. 12, Fanshawe (14-3)
can clinch a spot at the OCAA championship tournament with a
victory in its regular season finale at Mohawk on Feb. 15.

Georgian Men's Basketball
The Georgian Grizzlies are on their longest win streak of the
season having won four straight as they moved closer to clinching a
post-season berth in the OCAA East region. Georgian (10-6)
currently sits third in the standings after road victories at
Durham (74-73) on Feb. 3 and Fleming-Peterborough (87-77) on Feb.
4. Second-year forward Shane Rowe (Barrie, Ont.)
scored a combined 44 points and 34 rebounds in both games. Rowe is
averaging 22.7 points in 10 games.
Algoma Women's Basketball
The Algoma Thunderbirds have taken over first place in the OCAA
West region after an impressive 87-48 win over Fanshawe on Feb. 5.
First-year guard Corina Bruni (Sault Ste. Marie,
Ont.) led all players with 24 points while adding seven assists.
Fanshawe's only two losses of the regular season have come against
Algoma (13-2). Algoma has already clinched a post-season berth, but
is eyeing a top-two finish to earn an automatic spot at the OCAA
championship tournament.

Durham Men's Basketball
The Durham Lords have put together a five-game win streak,
including a 68-63 road win at second-place Algonquin on Jan. 27.
The Lords followed this up with a 72-64 win at La Cite on Jan. 28
to escape the Ottawa region with a 2-0 record. Second-year forward
Byron Wabano (Moosonee, Ont.) averaged over 10
points in the two victories. He also had eight rebounds against
Algonquin. Durham (9-5) currently sits in a tie for third place in
the OCAA East region.
Niagara Women's Volleyball
The Niagara Knights avenged an earlier loss to second-place
Nipissing with a 3-2 (25-21, 13-25, 25-20, 21-25, 17-15) upset win
on Jan. 28. Niagara followed this performance with a 3-0 (25-18,
25-12, 25-19) win over Canadore on Jan. 29 to move above the .500
mark (7-6) and into fourth place in the OCAA West region. Outside
hitter Jenna Bray (Burlington, Ont.) has been a
great addition to the Knights since the break. She finished the
weekend with 21 kills, five aces, and one block for 27 points.

Humber Men's Volleyball
The Humber Hawks avenged an earlier loss to previously unbeaten
Nipissing with a 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-16) road victory on
Jan. 22. Terrel Bramwell (Mississauga, Ont.)
continued his impressive campaign with a 21-point effort on 16
kills, three service aces and two stuff blocks. Humber improved its
regular season win streak to nine, clinched a post-season berth in
the OCAA West region, and is the No. 1- and No. 2-ranked team in
Ontario and Canada, respectively.
Algonquin Women's Basketball
The Algonquin Thunder avenged an earlier loss to previously
unbeaten Seneca with a 53-47 road win on Jan. 20. Sandre
Bascoe (Ottawa) led the way with 11 points, eight
rebounds, seven steals and one assist. Bascoe is averaging 18
points per game to lead her teammates. Algonquin has now won eight
straight games, sits on top of the OCAA East region standings, and
is the No. 1-ranked team in the province.

Seneca Men's Volleyball
The Seneca Sting came up with a big 3-1 (25-18, 25-17, 20-25,
25-15) road victory at Georgian on Jan. 11. Seneca was led by
third-year middle Justin Parsons (Mt. Pearl,
Nfld.) who contributed nine kills, six stuff blocks and one service
ace for 16 points. Second-place Seneca (10-1) has now won four
straight matches, and has created some distance between it and
fourth-place Georgian (8-4) in the OCAA East region standings.
Conestoga Women's Volleyball
In just its second year returning to OCAA women's volleyball,
Conestoga has made great strides, improving to 5-6 with a pair of
road victories over Mohawk and Redeemer to begin 2012. First-year
left side Tiffany Pinksen (Kitchener, Ont.) leads
the Condors with 82 points, averaging two points per set. Conestoga
has played strong away from home with a 4-3 record. Conestoga had a
3-19 record in 2010-11.

St. Lawrence-Kingston Men's Basketball
The St. Lawrence Vikings have put together a three-game win streak
to end the fall semester. St. Lawrence defeated Durham 82-53 at
home on Nov. 30 before road victories at Cambrian (64-46) on Dec. 4
and Fleming-Peterborough (66-58) on Dec. 7. Third-year guard
Terence Thomas (Ottawa) leads the team in scoring
averaging 16.2 points per game. The win streak has lifted St.
Lawrence's record above .500 at 6-4. The Vikings are currently in
fourth place in the East region.
Cambrian Women's Volleyball
The Cambrian Golden Shield became the first OCAA team to reach the
10-win mark with a success road trip to Peterborough, Ont. last
weekend. Cambrian defeated Fleming-Peterborough 3-1 (25-13, 26-28,
25-9, 25-13) on Dec. 3 and Trent 3-0 (26-24, 26-24, 25-5) on Dec.
4. Shawna Metcalf (Azilda, Ont.) is averaging 4.7
points per set to lead OCAA, overtaking Kelsey
Fielding (Sudbury, Ont.) and her 4.5 average. Both players
are fourth-year veterans. Cambrian (10-0) is one of two OCAA teams
that enter the December break undefeated, having lost just five
sets.

Algonquin Men's Volleyball
The Algonquin Thunder earned two road victories this past week,
defeating Seneca 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-18, 25-21) on Nov. 25
followed by a 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-18) win at Georgian on Nov. 26.
Third-year right side Mike Adams (Barrie, Ont.)
combined for 28 kills in both matches. Algonquin improved to 8-0 in
the OCAA East region, having only lost one set all season.
Algoma Women's Basketball
The Algoma Thunderbirds have shot up the OCAA West region standings, handing Fanshawe its first loss of the regular season on Nov. 26. Algoma won at Fanshawe 63-50 on the strength of Corina Burni's 29 points. Algoma won 55-31 at Mohawk the day before. Algoma improved to 6-2 on the year, with a perfect road record of 4-0. Algoma, Fanshawe and Sheridan all have six wins on top of the West region.

Nipissing Men's Volleyball
The Nipissing Lakers have jumped out to a 6-0 start to begin the OCAA regular season. In their last three matches, the Lakers have defeated the reigning 2010-11 OCAA gold, silver and bronze medalists, all on the road. Nipissing defeated Humber 3-1 (25-19, 25-17, 21-25, 25-23), Mohawk 3-2 (24-26, 25-17. 25-19, 20-25, 15-11) and Redeemer 3-2 (25-22, 25-19, 21-25, 17-25, 15-4). Duncan Cairns (Georgetown, Ont.) is averaging 3.2 points per set.
Lambton Women's Basketball
The Lambton Lions have put together their first two-game win streak since returning to OCAA women's basketball for 2011-12. Lambton defeated Redeemer 77-48 on Friday and Niagara 51-50 on Saturday. Both games were at home. Lambton now has a 3-3 record in a tight OCAA West region. Melanie Bouchard is averaging 10.5 points per game for the Lions. Lambton last played women's basketball in the OCAA nearly two decades ago.

Humber Rugby
Humber Women's Cross Country
The Humber Hawks won championships on two different fronts. The men's and women's rugby teams defended their OCAA titles, while the women's cross country team won a team title at the 2011 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Cross Country Running National Championships. Vicky Siemon won an individual silver medal.
Loyalist Men's Rugby
The Loyalist Lancers won the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Division II men's rugby championship for the third straight year on Saturday. Loyalist defeated Algonquin 15-7 in the OCAA gold medal match. The win marked Loyalist's 20th consecutive match without a loss. Loyalist's last loss came in the 2008 gold medal match against St. Lawrence-Kingston. Second-year player Luke Shillington (Belleville, Ont.) was named Man of the Match.

Sheridan Men's Basketball
The Sheridan Bruins jumped out to a 2-0 start in OCAA regular
season play, including an 87-84 victory over defending OCAA
champion Humber on Nov. 5 in a rematch of last season's gold medal
game. Khalid Abdel-Gabar scored a pair of three
pointers in the final 30 seconds to seal the win for Sheridan. The
Bruins had a 13-5 record last season en route to an OCAA silver
medal.
Fanshawe Women's Basketball
The Fanshawe Falcons did something no OCAA team could do for 55
straight regular season games. Fanshawe defeated Sheridan 77-56 on
the road to open its 2011-12 regular season, ending one of the
great win streaks in OCAA history. Samantha
Highgate scored 15 points in the victory. Fanshawe is now
2-0 to begin the season and sit on top of the OCAA West region
standings.

Humber Soccer
Humber Cross Country
The Humber Hawks won consecutive OCAA men's and women's soccer titles on Oct. 29 with Stavros Badunas and Keyla Moreno being named MVPs of their respective tournaments. It is the first two-year sweep of OCAA soccer championships since Humber did the trick in 2000 and 2001. Humber also won the women's and overall team titles at the OCAA Cross Country Championships on Oct. 29, led by women's individual champion Vicky Siemon.
Fanshawe Cross Country
Fanshawe defended its OCAA men's team title at the OCAA Cross Country Championships on Oct. 29. Clint Smith won his second straight individual silver medal in a time of 26:04 to lead Fanshawe to a three-peat, and a fourth OCAA men's championship in five years.

Humber Men's Golf
Humber successfully defended its national men's team title at the 2011 PING Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Golf National Championships from Oct. 19-21. Adrian Cord won the men's individual title, two strokes better than teammate Mark Hoffman. Also helping Humber defend its title were Ben Bell who finished eighth, Conor Hache who placed 13th, and Alex Dumais who finished 26th.
Durham Women's Fastball
Durham Women's Golf
Durham successfully defended its national women's team title at the 2011 PING CCAA Golf National Championships from Oct. 19-21, as well as its OCAA women's fastball championship from Oct. 21-22. National bronze medalist Tiffany Albath and teammate Kayleigh Kraemer returned the national banner to Durham, while championship MVP Brittany Bell helped to repeat provincially.

Seneca Men's Rugby
In a battle of undefeated men's rugby teams on Oct. 13, Seneca outlasted Humber 29-15 to clinch first place in OCAA Division I. Seneca (4-0-0) earns a bye and home field advantage throughout the OCAA post-season. Seneca has not won an OCAA men's rugby championship since 2005-06. Jesse Lofthouse scored two tries to lead the Sting.
Conestoga Women's Soccer
The Conestoga Condors women's soccer club kept themselves in the thick of the playoff race in the OCAA West region with two victories. Conestoga defeated Niagara at home 6-0 on Oct. 12 before escaping St. Clair with a 2-0 win on Oct. 14. Samantha Fowles scored four goals in both matches, including a hat trick against Niagara. Conestoga (4-3-0) is now above .500 having won three straight.

Humber Men's Golf
Fleming-Peterborough Men's Golf
Humber dominated the OCAA golf championships, winning its sixth straight OCAA Division I men's team title with a total score of 873, thirty-two strokes better than runner-up Georgian. Fleming-Peterborough won the Division II men's team title with a three-day total of 982. Fleming outlasted a strong group of Division II teams, with two strokes separating first place from third.
Durham Women's Golf
Durham's twosome of OCAA women's champion Tiffany Albath and runner-up Kayleigh Kraemer defeated Georgian's pairing of Jasmine Paton and Nicole Belcourt by 43 shots to give Durham its second consecutive OCAA women's team championship. Albath finished the 54-hole tournament three strokes better than Kraemer.

Algonquin Men's Soccer
The Algonquin Thunder have jumped out to a 3-0-0 start, including a pair of road wins last weekend. Algonquin has outscored the opposition 10-0 in its victories. Abdul Ibrahim leads all Thunder players with four goals. Ibrahim is the reigning OCAA East region rookie of the year and OCAA all-star. Algonquin is the No. 4 ranked team in the province.
Redeemer Women's Soccer
Similar to Algonquin's men, Redeemer has jumped out to a 3-0-0 start, all by shutout. The Royals have outscored the opposition 6-0 in its victories. Goaltender Shawna Druif has been outstanding as the last line of defence for Redeemer. The Royals are currently ranked No. 5 in the province, trailing first-place Humber by one win in the OCAA West region. Both teams meet each other on Wednesday.

Humber Cross Country
The Humber Hawks served notice that they are a team to contend with on the OCAA cross country circuit. Humber won both the women's and overall team titles at the 15th annual Fanshawe College Cross Country Invitational this past Saturday. Vicky Siemon of Humber won the women's 5 km race in a time of 19:07, almost a full minute ahead of the second place finisher.
Algonquin Rugby
Algonquin served up two victories in their OCAA rugby debuts this past weekend. The women's rugby team defeated Fleming-Lindsay 28-0 on the strength of two tries each by Jenna Crothers and Courtney Mastine. Algonquin's men's team defeated Fleming-Lindsay 53-7 thanks in large part to an OCAA record 18 points by Jeremy Nesbitt. This marks the first season that Algonquin has participated in OCAA rugby.
